Perth-based Scottish Americana collective, Red Pine Timber Company, are poised to return in 2017 with their eagerly awaited second record. The follow-up to 2014’s critically acclaimed Different Lonesome, the band recorded and self-produced the new LP at Perth’s Clearwater Studios. The band have gone from strength to strength in the years since their debut record was released, with excellent shows including three sold out headline slots at Perth Concert Hall, and an inventive online presence which has seen them promote the band with video clips and by live streaming busking sessions on the streets of their hometown.
Different Lonesome was an powerful opening statement, featuring a selection of acoustic-based Americana/folk numbers brought to life by the big-band style 8 piece line up. The cuts from the countrified groove of Dark Clouds, to the bright and airy Lonely Days Are Gone, while the blues harp-infused title track kept company with beautiful, melancholy single Hurricanes.
Ahead of the second album the band have just released new single Hollow Tree and are launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund and promote the album with a full UK tour. Hollow Tree features a distillation of everything that makes this band so special. Beginning with quiet acoustic guitar and the deep, rich vocals of frontman Gavin Munro, he’s soon joined by the excellent, complementary tones of singer Katie Whittaker and the track kicks into a laid back groove punctuated by the full brass section and little touches of mandolin. The intensity builds with great ad-libbed vocals from Whittaker around the main melody, and a fiddle solo from Dave MacFarlane – also the band’s dedicated audio engineer.
It’s a superb comeback from the group, teasing great things ahead on the new album. You can download Hollow Tree right now from Bandcamp.
If you like what you hear also check out the bands Kickstarter. Red Pine trombonist Chris Marshall recently funded his exceptional debut solo EP, So Long, via a similar campaign and now the band hope to take their music to an even greater audience with your help. Here’s Munro, Marshall and Whittaker to explain more:
