Gig Review: Red Pine Timber Company (King Tut’s, Glasgow – 05/11/17)

By Cameron Arndt, pics by CA If Red Pine Timber Company ever need a messy guitarist, average singer or rudimentary harmonica player I really hope they’ll give me a call… Given the stellar level of musicianship in the Perth-based 8-piece Americana collective such an invitation seems unlikely, but I wanted to mention my availability as being in the band just looks so damn fun! I’ve been aware of them for some years, but always at a distance. I listened to …

Gig Review: Matt Andersen (Jungle, Cologne – 15/10/17)

By Cameron Arndt, pic by CA I missed Matt Andersen when he came to Scotland earlier his year. Which was a pity as I’d greatly enjoyed his most recent album, Honest Man (2017). So when the opportunity came up to catch the man live in Cologne during a my own trip round Europe I jumped at the chance. Clearly I didn’t jump fast enough, however, as I didn’t quite make the start of the show. Germany being Germany the ticket …

Review: 3 Days At The Montreux Jazz Festival 2017

By Cameron Arndt, all photos by CA, all shows reviewed took place 9th-12th July 2017   It’s been a stormy day in Montreux. We step off the train into a torrential rainstorm and struggle through the short walk to our hotel near the lakeside. The usual spectacular view is completely obscured by clouds and mist, with only the start of the lake visible and no hint of the stunning vista of mountains that lies on the far side.   Fortunately the …

Gig Review: The Temperance Movement (Fat Sam’s Dundee, 17/03/17)

Review and pictures by Cameron Arndt Following an initial batch of acoustic shows last year, The Temperance Movement returned for a mini-tour of four acoustic dates in Scotland last week. It was an intriguing proposition, as their back catalogue contains a number of songs which would clearly work well in an acoustic setting. Even more interesting was how they would approach their heavier, fuzzed-up blues rock numbers. Having missed last year’s Glasgow show we took to the road last Friday …

Single Review/Kickstarter Info: Hollow Tree (Red Pine Timber Company)

By Cameron Arndt Perth-based Scottish Americana collective, Red Pine Timber Company, are poised to return in 2017 with their eagerly awaited second record. The follow-up to 2014’s critically acclaimed Different Lonesome, the band recorded and self-produced the new LP at Perth’s Clearwater Studios. The band have gone from strength to strength in the years since their debut record was released, with excellent shows including three sold out headline slots at Perth Concert Hall, and an inventive online presence which has …

#6: Americana/Jazz – Chris Marshall (Red Pine Timber Company, Solo)

Roads To Rock N Roll #6 One of the most interesting features in Classic Rock’s – sadly recently discontinued – Blues Magazine was ‘The First Time I Met The Blues’ where a musician was asked what got them interested in blues  music in the first place. While it’s perhaps a little foolish to try to pin an artist down to a particular genre, in this series we’re going to attempt to do it anyway! What we’re really interested in is …

Music Review: Honest Man (Matt Andersen)

Review by Cameron Arndt Honest Man is an apt title for Canadian singer/songwriter Matt Andersen’s new album, for it’s a record filled with direct, raw and sincere songs, each delivered with empathy and intensity. The ten tracks contain touches of Americana, folk, rock, soul and R&B, but really it’s a release that refuses to be pigeonholed. What really ties it all together are Andersen’s adventurous spirit and tremendous, impassioned singing voice. Based in New Brunswick, Andersen is rapidly becoming known …
